I can't help but think my dad underestimates the value of a handwritten letter, an email, a phone call, or anything other than monetary indications to acknowledge my existence.

I must sound like a horridly spoiled brat. I appreciate the money. God knows I need it. I should just shut up for all eternity and accept things for what they are.
