witty-remark's Diaryland Diary

Lessons for the Uninitiated:
1. Liberation is fragmented. Your independence and sense of self-sufficiency become brittle as you try to stretch yourself simultaneously across the four corners of your queen-sized mattress, wrestling the bedspread over the edges. You snap at the same time as the sheet—you , like twigs collecting at the base of a bare tree and it, like an unruly, white-cotton alligator collecting in the centre of your bed in a limp heap.

2. Solitary confinement is a shared experience. You will hear the moans of your neighbors rise up through the vents in a baited chorus that will betray your sleep. Waking up to the sounds will be concomitantly delightful and nauseating. Most of all, it will serve as a reminder that you are both not alone and deeply lonely.
