Ex lovers are a great way to collect the things that you want from the people that you don’t. Records and record players. Trinkets and jewelry. And you use them with guilt. Without knowing whether you’re talking about the person or the object they give you. Objectifying the person. Personifying their gift.

I drew a set of steel pipes that coiled around themselves. Tight, constricting, with patterns that make no sense. Like stairways that lead to doorways that open to a twenty-foot drop. And it feels natural, looking at the pipes squeezing around themselves, laden with lead, thinking of long-gone main squeezes leading nowhere.
